We had a meeting at Temak with peter, job the manager and i. Yesterday evening , we had a meeting with Peter concerning the same and went over what was dicussed and we agreed. The following were the suggestions and advise from Temak. Temak has been in existence for the last 15 years. when they started it was very difficult from the begining for them and for small organizations too.
What they were faced with for a while during the beginning was:
- Lack of experience on project running. - Lack of enough funds to start with. - Difference in passion between the funder and the project manager. (both have to work together in putting the passions in use towards the goal. - Problems posed by the community supported. - working with people not carrying the same viison as you. - Difference in culture and way of living between the project members and the funders. - Exreme poverty in the communities supported that makes the people needed to be helped look at the project as a way of getting handouts. - Beliefs and cultures in the slum and suspicion of the help extended.( intension- human sacrifices).
one thing that Temak stressed on so much was patience as projects needs time to grow. The workers and the managers need to know that it takes process and patince to allow time to perfect shinners. Decisions made in hurry , can cause more damage and sometimes one agrees to do things that they are not sure of to please the other and it might get to fail. He for example told us where we failed on the beads .. He said Training time and production time are different and can not run together for beginners. Temak said they are doing well in beads because we needed to have used the first amount sent to us as seed money. This was training money that was to be used for experimenting. when the women train, the beads are wasted, made badly, lost and what comes out is rejected by the market as competition is high. we ought to put aside money to pay a qualified trainer who comes daily and spends like 8 hours daily for one full month in perfecting the work , otherwise volunteers come and go. Then after 3 months we employ good workers and pay them from the sales. So he requested Peter to ask you to Give us what you gave us towards beads and they will show us what to do to succeed, even purchase from us. otherwise what we have made are ugly and every time it is rejected due to quality, the workers , managers, funders are frustrated. whwn trainers aint paid , they dont come back.( 3,500 for 3 months) - Apart from skills women from the slums need money to feed the others or they will not be regular. when properly trained, they will work well and be happy to earn from sales. -He also advised us to be attending seminars and trainings more frequently on project management, sustainability and requested if the manager would be sponsored to attend evening classes for project management for 3months and it would be a success as he realized that Caroline has a passion for the kids so much and just needs to be trained to generate money. He said they had to be trained as most organizations do and have succeeded. Passion * knowledge = successs. Temak advised that He would help shinners identify a plot and as soon as that is done, then things must be done fast as usually the people who sell their land do so when in urgent need and can not wait for long. first come fir |
