The Shinners runs a kindergarten that strives to provide child education, food, basic health care, and the freedom to carers to seek income generating activities throughout the day. The kindergarten provides daycare for around 35 little ones between the ages of 1 - 4 years, who come to the centre daily for orientation, feeding and Education. Most of the time the orphans either live with extended relatives or grandparents. We thought it wise to provide daycare for them at the Shinners to give their carers a chance to make a living. The children are provided with lunch and are involved in a variety of activities aimed at developing the skills and self-awareness they need in order to be responsible for their own future. Hopefully this will enable them to earn a living as adults and perhaps pass their knowledge on for the benefit of others. At night the children go back home with their carers or other relatives. |

Primary education in Kenya is free. Secondary education must be paid for but most families can’t afford it. The scholarship program provides secondary school fees for selected students - those primary school children who have passed and are promising in this respect. At the moment we are supporting the secondary education of 5 children. We have a number of other children registered with us in various schools but we are not doing much for them due to lack of finances. We need a lot of assisitance from other groups in order to eradicate poverty and enhance education within this community. |

We provide training for the carers and young people in bead work, pottery, art work and knitting. We also have programs which teach them how to keep chickens, sew and use a computer. These activities help to generate funding for the centre and provide those involved with valuable skills which enable them to earn a living and support their dependants. In addition it is hoped that they will subsequently pass these skills on to others who can also make use of them.
